Research into the science of sound healing and the healing power of sound is a recent phenomena. Because the scientific community has been reluctant to do research, many of the studies have been done by researchers outside of the scientific community or scientists working without external funding for their projects. We envision a day when the power of sound and vibration is examined thoroughly by scientific communities across the world. For now, it is within reach to compile as much information about the science of sound healing as possible.
MUSIC HEALING AND THERAPY
Let's start with a well-recognized phenomena: Music Healing. Many people have heard the stories of miraculous comebacks for house plants that have had music played near them. Scientific research has confirmed this.
In Dr. Mitchell Gaynor's book, The Healing Power of Sound, he cites specific case studies proving the effect. According to Gaynor, a researcher in Minnesota found that agricultural plants such as corn respond and grow at an amazing rate when they are exposed to the sounds of the sitar, a traditional stringed instrument of India.
Another researcher in Denver, Colorado, compared the effects that different kinds of music had on plants. We found this research into the science of sound healing very interesting. Plants were placed in five identical greenhouses. Soil, light and water conditions were all identical, and the types of plants were the same in all of the greenhouses.
For several months, the researcher pumped different kinds of music into each of the greenhouses. In one, Bach was played, in the second, Indian music, the third, loud rock, and the last, country and Western music was played. In the fifth greenhouse, no music was played at all.
The plants in the greenhouse where only heavy rock music was played did not do well at all. Their growth was stunted, and they would not flower. In the greenhouses with Bach and Indian music, the plants were green and healthy, with many flowers. The plants that heard country and Western music grew the same as those with no music - at a moderate rate, and with a normal amount of flowers.
Another book that highlights the science of sound healing and the healing phenomena of sound is The Mozart Effect by Don Campbell. In the book Campbell cites research conducted at the Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory in Irvine, CA, where a team headed by Frances H. Rauscher, Ph.D., had undergraduate students listen to ten minutes of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major. The students were tested before and after listening to the music for spatial IQ. They showed improved scores of eight to nine points for ten to fifteen minutes after hearing the music.
Yet another instance of the science of sound healing is the research of Fabian Maman, a French composer and bio-energeticist. He conducted experiments with two breast cancer patients, each of whom toned for 3 and ? hours a day over the course of a month. In the first patient the tumor vanished completely.
An amazing feat, but perhaps just coincidence? Well, the second woman had surgery to remove the tumor, whereupon it was discovered that the tumor was reduced and completely dry. In the absence of metastases, the malignancy was excised and the patient made a full recovery. Two cases. Two complete recoveries from breast cancer.
An additional instance of research into the science of sound healing was written in a 1993 report by scientists at Michigan State University. They disclosed that levels of interleukin-1 (an immune-cell messenger molecule that helps to regulate the activity of other immune cells) increased by 12.5 to 14% when subjects listened to music for only 15 minutes.
Participants who listened to music they themselves preferred--whether Mozart, light jazz, New Age, or impressionist such as Ravel--exhibited up to 25% lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that can depress the immune system when produced in excess. This was after only fifteen minutes!
The research into the science of sound healing goes on. Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, also mentioned above, is a medical oncologist (cancer doctor) who uses quartz crystal singing bowls as a mandatory part of his medical practice. He has found the vibrational properties of the bowls to have a profound effect on his patients. He mentions several cases of patients who had tumors completely disappear after being exposed to the sound of the bowls. Many of his other patients who incorporated the crystal bowls into a daily lifestyle habit had a much higher than standard recovery rate with less negative effects from chemotherapy and radiation.
SCIENCE OF SOUND HEALING AND MEDICINE
Sound and vibration are starting to make inroads into the medical community also. Modern medicine now uses sound waves to break up kidney and gallstones in the body. The machine used is called a lithotripter. This machine bombards the stones with a specific sound frequency for one or two hours. The patient is admitted in the morning and discharged in the evening. Generally no anesthetic is needed. With most patients only one treatment is necessary. The pulverized stone is passed out of the body through the urine.
Additionally researchers at University of Alberta have used a sound based technology called Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) to gently massage teeth roots and jawbones to cause growth and have grown new teeth. As of June 2006, a device has been licensed by the FDA and Health Canada for use by dentists.
Yet another example of research done on the science of sound healing is found in the book Music as Medicine by Deforia Lane. Deforia reports on a research study done at the California State University. Thirty migraine sufferers were studied for a five week period. There were three groups. One group listened to their favorite music. The other group used relaxation and biofeedback techniques. The third group was the control group, they did neither. All three groups received the same amount of migraine medication. At the end of the study the results were clear, music proved the most effective supplemental technique. A follow-up a year later showed that the patients who continued to make listening to music a regular part of their daily routine reported an 83% decrease in migraines.
83%!!!! That is an amazing statistic. From the same book by Deforia Lane, another research study done at the Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta showed premature and low-weight babies gained weight faster and used oxygen more efficiently through sound therapy. The babies were exposed to an hour and a half of music every day.
And one more research study mentioned in the book was done at Baltimore's St. Agnes Hospital. It was found that playing classical music in the critical care units reduced the need for medicine to control pain dramatically. One doctor stated, "Half an hour of music produced the same effects as ten milligrams of Valium."
The research being done into the science of sound healing and the effects of sound and healing are astounding. The effects of sound and music therapy run the gamut of health conditions, from increasing cancer survival rates to reducing pain in chronic sufferers. It is our hope that the medical community and scientific researchers will begin to seriously investigate the connection between healing and sound.
Some of the Verified effects of Sound Energy Healing are:
- Reduced Blood Pressure
- Reduced Heart and Respiration Rates
- Reduced Depression
- Reduced Migraines
- Reduced Pain
- Increased Oxygen Intake
- Increased Weight Gain in Premature Babies
- Increased Sleep for people suffering from Sleep Disorders
- 25% Decrease in Cortisol Levels (Stress Levels)
- Increased Immune Cell Activity
- Increased Brain Functioning through Spatial IQ testing
- Higher Statistical Odds of Recovering from Illnesses and Diseases like Cancer
This is by no means a complete list, but it is here to serve as a reference of completed case studies done by medical doctors into the effects of the healing powers of sound.
In our own work with music for sound healing we have seen people relax and break free of the stress and depression holding them prisoner. We have seen people get the first good night's sleep in a long time. We have seen them work through old emotional issues that have been holding them back. We have seen people leave unhealthy relationships, heal chronic physical conditions, release unsupportive eating patterns, and transform their lives completely.
In other parts of the sound healing section of this website we review the sound healing therapies available today, as well as sound healing techniques you can do at home. Visit the main sound healing section to dig further into this fascinating subject.
If you have done or know of research done on the science of sound healing, please send us information about the study. We would love to add it to the content on this page.
